Spending Deal Keeps Halt on Trucker Rule

The 2,000 page omni-bus spending bill signed by President Obama contained a provision that continues the suspension of certain hours-of-service regulations for professional drivers.

Under those suspended rules, which were overturned in late 2014, drivers are no longer required to use a 34-hour restart to reset their weekly allotment of hours required to include two off-duty periods between 1 a.m. -5 a.m..  It also limited drivers to using the 34-hour restart provision once a week.

The spending package specifies that the FMCSA must show the rules demonstrate "statistically significant improvement in all outcomes related to safety, operator fatigue, driver health and longevity, and work schedules" before the suspension is lifted.
