Service the Truckload Way

Trailer 51243 had a bad hub preventing the driver from moving past the Brazil, IN area yesterday. This was a hot Automotive load to Ford in Kansas City, MO for 12 noon delivery Monday.

There were 2 vendors involved yesterday evening between Brazil, IN and Terre Haute, IN helping to facilitate the wheel being removed and the axle being chained up to the trailer frame so they could tow the trailer for repairs. We were trying to determine if a replacement hub could be located or if we had to transload the trailer. The 2nd vendor in Terre Haute, IN was able to locate the hub, brake drum ad other parts needed for replacement and had the trailer repaired within 2 hours or at approx 8:30pm last night. One of our dedicated drivers was able to repower the load and now we WILL make On Time Delivery.

With the coordination and teamwork of our maintenance group (Fred Bowling, Larry Standifer, Randy Bise, Benji, Josh, JD and possibly a few others) we were able to get this resolved. The vendor in Terre Haute, IN "Rosnett Semitrailer" did a fantastic job. This would not have been successful without the 2 vendors working as they did.

Here is a short video that shows the manufacturing process for one of our new WABASH 53' trailers....Enjoy!

The Wizard of Wabash

On Friday we will be touring one of our brand new Wabash 53' trailers.  Here is a small introduction to the Wabash philosophy of innovation:

Attention To Detail

At Wabash, we believe that trailer design is both an art and a science and understand that small solutions can solve major problems. We’ve authored over 70 patents, 60 attributed to Rod Ehrlich, the “Wizard of Wabash,” who today serves in the role of Chief Technology Officer.

From doors to lockrod systems, electrical and lighting enhancements, floor designs and engineering advancements that minimize freight damage and reduce equipment maintenance, we’ve never stopped innovating. The result has been dramatic improvements in safety, ease of use, durability, and performance, benefits that have been rolled out into to the industry over the past 28 years.

At Wabash National we’re proud of our strong legacy of product innovation and the way our products have shaped the trailer manufacturing industry. As we enter the next exciting chapter of our company, we remain committed to partnering with our customers to achieve success

Trends in Trucking

Here are some great facts concerning our industry:

  1. Trucks moved 9.4 billion tons of freight in 2012, or 68.5% of all domestic shipments.
  2. We employ 6.9 million people in trucking-related industries.
  3. The majority of trucking companies are considered small businesses.
  4. 90.5% of trucking companies operate six or fewer trucks.
  5. Only 2.8% of trucking companies operate more than 20 tractors.
  6. Class 6-8 trucks traveled 137.2 billion miles in 2011.
  7. Trucking industry paid $36.5 billion in federal and state highway user fees and taxes in 11.

You are a part of a vital industry to our economy and our country.

Outlook: Truck Tonnage Reflects Great Year

The American Trucking Associationsadvanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index increased 0.6% in December, after surging 4.7% in November. The increase pushed the index 6.2% higher for the full year making it the index's best year since 1998.

Novembers increase was significantly larger than the preliminary gain of 2.7% ATA reported on December 20, 2013. In December, the index equaled 131.7 (2000=100) versus 130.9 in November. Decembers level is a record high. Compared with December 2012, the SA index increased 8.2%.

The not seasonally adjusted index, which represents the change in tonnage actually hauled by the fleets before any seasonal adjustment, equaled 123.0 in December, which was 1.4% below the previous month (124.8).

“Tonnage ended 2013 on a high note, which fits with many economic indicators as trucking is an excellent reflection of the tangible goods economy,” said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. “The final quarter was the strongest we’ve seen in a couple of years, rising 2.2% from the third quarter and 9.1% from a year earlier.”

Costello reiterated his statement from last month: the tonnage acceleration in the second half of the year is pointing to an economy that is likely stronger than some might believe.

“Im seeing more broad-based gains now. The improvement is not limited to the tank truck and flatbed sectors like earlier in the year," he said. "With manufacturing and consumer spending picking up, coupled with solid volumes from hydraulic fracturing, I look for tonnage to be good in 2014 as well.”

Trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy, representing 68.5% of tonnage carried by all modes of domestic freight transportation, including manufactured and retail goods. Trucks hauled 9.4 billion tons of freight in 2012. Motor carriers collected $642.1 billion, or 80.7% of total revenue earned by all transport modes.

Def Means Cool....DEF means Diesel Exhaust Fluid

We thought it would be helpful to understand two primary components around our new Cummins engine on the Prostar trucks and what is the purpose of DEF (diesel exhaust fluid):

Q. What is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)?

A.
SCR is a technology that uses a urea based diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) and a catalytic converter to significantly reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. SCR is the leading technology being used to meet 2010 emission regulations.

Q. How does an SCR system work?
A.

The purpose of the SCR system is to reduce levels of NOx (oxides of nitrogen emitted from engines) that are harmful to our health and the environment. SCR is the aftertreatment technology that treats exhaust gas downstream of the engine. Small quantities of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) are injected into the exhaust upstream of a catalyst, where it vaporizes and decomposes to form ammonia and carbon dioxide. The ammonia (NH3) is the desired product which in conjunction to the SCR catalyst, converts the NOx to harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O).

Q. What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF)?
A.

DEF is the reactant necessary for the functionality of the SCR system. It is a carefully blended aqueous urea solution of 32.5% high purity urea and 67.5% deionized water.

Q. What is urea?
A.

Urea is a compound of nitrogen that turns to ammonia when heated. It is used in a variety of industries, including as a fertilizer in agriculture

The Truckline's Power Plant

Here is a great video (go to actual website to play video) about the partnership between International and Cummins.  This is the primary truck of choice for our truckline in 2014.  We will have a brand new truck and trailer on-site here in Lowell on Friday (January 24).

Our new trucks and trailers have been a large focus during the question and answer parts of our fireside chats.  Understanding our equipment will help aid all of us when we talk to our drivers and our clients.

New HOS and Effect on Utilization

Rules limiting the number of hours that commercial drivers can be on the job are resulting in a marked drop in productivity, trucking companies claim.

Schneider National, Inc., one of the nation’s largest truckload carriers, predicted back in February of 2011 a productivity drop of between 3% and 4%. Four months after implementation of the HOS rules, Schneider reported declines of 3.1% on solo shipments and 4.3% on team shipments.

“The Hours of Service changes could not have come at a worse time,” said Dave Geyer, senior vice president and general manager of Schneider’s Van Truckload division. He said the rules make it tougher to recruit new drivers, in a industry that has been suffering from a labor shortage for years.
The HOS rules are exacerbating the situation, critics say. In 2012, the industry was short about 113,000 drivers. That number is expected to climb to 323,000 by 2015, according to the latest forecast by FTR Associates.

Geyer added that there’s no evidence that the new rules have made the roads any safer. “Ongoing feedback from our drivers is consistent,” he said. “They do not feel better rested as a result of the rules change; just less productive.”

Reports by industry analysts indicate similar third-quarter drops in productivity among other major carriers, although not as dramatic as that of Schneider. J.B. Hunt Transport, Inc., Werner Enterprises, Inc., Swift Transportation Co. and Knight Transportation Inc. are among those to have experienced declines of between 2% and 3% as a result of the HOS rules, according to J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

The biggest impact appears to be on carriers that haul full truckloads for a single customer, as opposed to the less-than-truckload (LTL) operators that service multiple accounts. The reason is truckload’s longer average length of haul, resulting in “a 6% to 7% drag on productivity in its longest haul lanes and a 3% drag overall,” according to Stifel Nicolaus & Co.

Said Armutcuoglu, managing director of investment banker Loeb Partners Corp., said it’s too early to tell whether the HOS rules will have a lasting depressive effect on trucking operations. It’s unclear how or even whether carriers are monitoring drivers’ compliance with the law, he said. “My guess is, it will take a while until this settles in.”

Some carriers are even taking advantage of the stricter environment, according to Armutcuoglu. He cited P.A.M. Transportation Services, Inc., a smaller trucker that reported strong utilization gains in the third quarter. It appears to be picking up some business from rivals that are less well-equipped to withstand the tighter restrictions.

Armutcuoglu believes the new HOS rules, coupled with the chronic driver shortage and a still-weak economy, will drive many smaller carriers out of business. The majority of trucking companies own fewer than five vehicles, he said, and cannot survive a 3% to 5% drop in utilization.

FMCSA is defending the stricter rules. In a statement, it said they are intended “to reduce fatigue-related truck crashes following years of scientific research, safety studies, and consideration of public comments.”

The changes will prevent 1,400 crashes and 560 injuries and save 19 lives per year, “while only impacting the most extreme schedules where drivers are working more than 70 hours per week,” the agency added. “In the long term, [they] will also generate $280 million in savings from fewer crashes and $470 million in savings from improved driver health.”

Hunt Hero-Andy Parrish

Andy Parrish went out of his way to help us with a critical emergency load yesterday.  We were impressed by his dedication to stay until we heard from his driver that was about to shut down because we needed her location.
Along with that dedication, he stayed on the phone with us while we helped the PCS carrier understand the shut down location and how critical the load was for the customer. Andy showed great leadership skills and stepped up to help Nestle Water's get the load to Costco. Please give Andy a big pat on the back and let him know we appreciate his hard work.

Hunt Hero-Susan Looney

For the past several weeks Susan has been staying late to keep in contact with the Orientation classes in the Southwest and West Service Centers.

She stays in constant contact with the Service Centers to get the drivers out of the class quickly, assigned to an open truck and supplying accurate travel information to each driver.

She follows up at home on iDesk to make sure the drivers travel plans are completed and issues are dealt with.

Susan is the most courteous and driver conscious person that I know. She is always asking to help anyone and never leaves anything incomplete. She is a vital part of a brand new drivers "orientation" into the company and is a warm voice and personality for them to work with.

Hunt Hero-Deryn Hanson

In the last 3 months the Southwest Region has taken on 3 new Fleet Managers.

Deryn jumped right in and started helping out with employee development. She has been instrumental in helping train while continuing to keep her business running smoothly. Also, while they were being trained Deryn had 10 more trucks on her fleet than the rest of the Fleet Managers in the SW. She is a dedicated and hard working employee!

The View from the Customer's Seat

We sent an update to a major client concerning some of the changes in our Truckline.  Here is what they sent back:

Thank you for your kind note and best of luck.  We agree that the OTR business needs improvement, as we have shifted away from JB Hunt in several lanes over the past 12 months due to the inconsistent performance levels you mentioned. I am encouraged that JB Hunt has resolved to improve this important part of the business and am confident that J.B. Hunt will succeed in your endeavors.

We share in this customers confidence with our plan.  It will be exciting to hear what this Top Tier client says about Truckload in one year.

Football Sunday at the Flying J

As we returned from a DCS Kickoff Meeting in Louisville, KY this Sunday, we decided to fuel our vehicle at the Flying J Truck Stop on I-44 in Missouri.  We stopped in to pick up the latest copy of The Trucker and several recruiting publications at the fueling island.  You could hear cheering going on in the Driver Lounge, so we ducked in to see 20 drivers watching the 49ers-Panthers game.  It was a stark reminder of how many drivers are out on the road on the weekend and use the truckstops as a safe haven.

Welcome to Truck Talk

Welcome to the initial post for our J.B. Hunt Truckload Blogspot.  This is a social media forum that we will use to communicate to our Truckload employees.  We look forward to sharing our success stories.  Spotlighting our employees doing great work is our goal.

Enjoy and Blog On!
