What is the #1 item that JBT can do to reduce our maintenance costs?

I asked the Maintenance Directors to share their opinions on what we could do to influence our maintenance spend.  The information they shared was excellent.  Here is a Top 10 list:

  1. Pre/Post Trip Inspections
  2. Meet scheduled service dates
  3. Small part replacement program-carry tools and light kits
  4. Utilize inspection lanes at terminals
  5. Tires, Tires, Tires-Inspect them, protect them, and use an air gauge liberally.  Maintain a spare if you have a tractor with a spare tire carrier
  6. Reduce unscheduled maintenance in ALL shops;  Run b-service to b-service unless Safety Related items occur
  7. Be specific when writing up equipment (more detail is better)
  8. Modification of equipment
  9. Keep our truck interiors clean, especially when slipseating to another tractor
  10. Use trailer door tie backs (bungees) EVERY time.
